Spring is sprung.
While the weather is up and down, the flowers are coming up, grass is turning green and the trees are starting to bud out. Horse people judge spring by one thing and that is if the horsehair is flying. And the horsehair is definitely flying here now! Fancy has dropped enough hair to make two minis I believe.
It was a beautiful weekend here. Saturday was quite a bit chillier with a high only in the 40s, but today was close to 70° and lovely. I spent read more...

A recently disbudded kid (not my photo)
I have a customer requesting her 4H goats be disbudded. I stopped that practice many years ago from both a moral dilemma and because of health concerns I witnessed. I’ve told the customer that if she wishes it done, she must assume all liability and be present when it occurs for I will not take part. To be honest I'm struggling with not canceling the sale outright, that's how strongly I feel over it. With all that shared, I thought it might be a good idea to do an informative piec read more...

"Who ever told you you have a right to be happy?”
That question comes from my favorite mini-series Vikings. It’s a question worth considering. From where does the illusion we have a right to happiness come? The Bible makes no such promise. So from where does it come?
Society has people chasing “happiness”.

Some people come home and take a nap at lunch; I split kindling and load up the wood rack. We are not the same.
Have you ever heard the country song Don’t blink? I think I live that song daily. Just look at this year. It’s November already! Where goes the days? Where goes the years? It all moves so quickly. My four-legged companions are growing old on me. I am growing old and for some reason, my grandmother‘s face keeps reflecting back in the mirror at me.

Here it is September putting 2025’s summer in the books, and it has turned into another very dry one. Jefferson County is in a severe drought according to state agencies and I must agree wholeheartedly. The pastures and the pond are definitely showing it. Trees are losing their leaves and the ground has cracked. It’ll be yet another year where hay gets fed early and the concern of having enough is real. Yet this evening I sit listening to the lovely sound of rain hitting the metal read more...

Is the recent fascination with homesteading a fad or a movement that will continue gaining momentum?
Once we were nation of homesteaders. In the mid to late 19th century in America however we saw a population shift away from the family farm to population centers. People traded away the hard work of the farm in favor of working 10 to 12 hour days in factories. They traded away the crowing of roosters for the shouts of people. They traded away the open fields for sprawling cityscapes. A read more...

Are you All In?
I listened to a brief YouTube video a few days ago and the person talked about how to be successful You must be All In. Totally dedicated to what you’re seeking/pursuing, for if you’re not you’ll never find the level of success that you hope. So that got me thinking, am I truly all in on my pursuits? Or am I only going through the motions?
In another lifetime ago, my ex used to tell me that I was only “play farming”. Ev read more...

A repeated question I see getting asked constantly is “how do I make money from my Homestead?” What they are really asking is “How can I make a profit?” as “making money” and “making a profit” is not the same. Regardless that is a good question and one that most of us living this lifestyle are asking. Many of us would love to live this life full time or at least have our efforts show a little (monetary) benefit.
I do not think that there read more...

Spring is here and it's time to get the gardens prepared for planting and the pastures for reseeding. If you have a tiller or a tractor with a plow or tiller you are all set but what do you do if you do not? Animal power to the rescue!
Pigs and chickens have been used to till up garden areas for untold centuries. Both species live to tear up ground! They're both more sustainable, and cheaper, than a tractor or a tiller not to mention Usually quieter (lol).
