Why Choose a Heritage Breed?
When you choose a Heritage breed, you're helping preserve a living, breathing piece of American history.
The animals we know today as Heritage breeds were once found on nearly every farm and homestead across America. They fed families, provided clothing and materials, and worked alongside the people who cared for them. As small family farms declined, many of these breeds were replaced by modern hybrid animals bred to grow faster, produce more milk, lay more eggs, or yield more fiber.
While these hybrids helped meet the demands of a growing population increasingly disconnected from its food sources, much was lost in the process. Traits such as natural hardiness, efficient foraging ability, adaptability, and the capacity to thrive without heavy grain inputs were often sacrificed in favor of production.
Thanks to the dedication of a small number of breeders and conservationists, some of these historic breeds survived. Sadly, many others were lost to history. Today, farms like Broken H are rediscovering the value of Heritage breeds and proving that they still have an important place in the modern world.
From our seasonal heirloom vegetables and fruits to the eggs and meat produced by our Dominique and American Bresse chickens, and the flavorful pork from our Guinea Hogs, we invite you to experience food the way your grandparents may have known it—food that helped build America.
Whether you're interested in adding a new face to your herd, purchasing farm products, or simply learning more about Heritage breeds, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us with any questions or to learn more about our offerings.
